SURVIVOR CHALLENGE - Social Recruitment Event, Alpha Kappa Psi

I served as Vice President of Membership for my co-ed Business Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi in the Fall of 2021. As VP of Membership, I was tasked with running the entirety of our recruitment process including choosing a theme and creating on-theme professional and social activities. The theme was Survivor (after the long running CBS reality TV Show) and events included "casting auditions" (interview and resume review), "immunity idol hunt" (campus wide scavenger hunt), "shelter building challenge" (creating a durable structure with a team), tribal council (case competition), and my favorite, the "final immunity challenge".
The final immunity challenge split Prospective New Members (PNMs) into three different tribes. We began by designing tribe flags and then transitioned into the main event. This event was based on real survivor challenges and had contestants running relay style to untie knots and retrieve bags of puzzle pieces, using a team work exercise to "cross the field", having to decipher a combination lock to open a puzzle board, and finally unscrambling a word puzzle using a phrase that they had heard frequently throughout the recruitment process.
I decided to have a variety of events to ensure that all PNMs could participate and that a single event was not solely athletic based.

Total Participants: 80 (50 PNM, 30 current members)
Total Budget: $30
Pitfalls and Challenges: we had a very limited budget overall, having only $30 for all recruitment events. Most of the supplies I had to borrow from friends or get creative with my DIY skills when creating the puzzle boards and pieces. The planning for this final challenge was also happening simultaneously with the other recruitment events going on, as all 5 events occurred every other day over the span of 2 weeks.

Prep Work and Project Background of "Final Immunity Challenge"
  • 1 month before event
    • Outsource and create materials (puzzle pieces, locks, tribe flags, art supplies for decorating, etc.)
    • Ideate the course and created an order that made the most sense/best flow
  • 1 week before before event
    • Ensure that each team had the right amount of puzzle pieces, correct lock combos (since they were all different), and all supplies were in order
    • Created larger props such as tribe flags and puzzle bags
    • Email all participants with their "tribe assignment" and randomize teams, encouraged teams to wear their team color(s)
    • Brief the current members on how the day would play out and their responsibilities
  • Day of Responsibilities
    • Set up the course before participants arrived
    • MC the day and ensure that everyone is having a good time!
